Weight Calculator
Gym Vibes includes a Weight Calculator that works out how to load whatever you’re lifting on, so you can keep your head on the set instead of the maths.
Updated in Gym Vibes 0.9.0: the calculator now knows the equipment each exercise uses.
How It Works
While logging an exercise, long press the weight field or choose Calculate Weight from the field’s menu. On a wider screen, such as an iPad, a Mac or the web app, there is also a calculator icon inside the field.
The calculator opens on the right equipment for the exercise, and its title says which one (Barbell Calculator, Dumbbell Calculator, and so on). If your gym does it differently, pick another type from the row at the top. Gym Vibes remembers that choice for the exercise on your device.
Trying numbers out is safe: nothing changes until you tap INSERT, which puts the weight in the set. Closing the calculator with the X or a swipe leaves the set as it was.
One View for Each Kind of Equipment
- Barbell and EZ bar: type the total and see the plates on each side, drawn on the bar. Choose the bar’s weight (45, 35 or 15 lbs for a barbell). The chips add one plate to each side: +45 adds 90 lbs to the bar.
- Plate-loaded machines: plates on the machine’s horns. The sled or Smith bar is not counted unless you choose to count it.
- Landmine and T-bar: plates piled on the one loaded sleeve.
- Dumbbells and kettlebells: the weight of one, the nearest sizes on the rack, and what the pair adds up to.
- Single and dual weight stacks: where the pin goes, with the stack’s step size and any add-on weight. A dual stack shows both sides and their total.
- Bodyweight: the weight you add, as plates on a dip belt or as a vest or a held dumbbell.
For dumbbells, kettlebells and dual stacks the weight column reads EACH, so 50 means one 50 lb dumbbell, not the pair.
New sets also start at a weight you can actually load, such as an empty bar plus pairs of 5s or a real dumbbell size, instead of something like 223.3 lbs. See Historical Defaulting.
